How to Remove Gum from Clothes?

Things You Will Need:

  • Several ice cubes
  • A butter knife
  • A clean sink
  • A small bowl (optional)

1.) Prepare the Area and Wait Before you Remove Gum from Clothes

Steps to Follow:

  • Take all your tools and the garment to your sink. You can also use a bowl or a container which is of appropriate size for cleaning.
  • Now, take out a few ice cubes. It is better if you have an ice-cube trays as they forms ice with a flat bottom and a flat top. If you don’t have an ice tray, any ice will be fine.
  • Next, place one ice-cube under the gummed area of your clothe.
  • As you have placed the gum spot in the center of the cube, now carefully balance the second ice-cube on the top of the gummed area.
  • In case you are using weirdly shaped ice cubes, put the ice cubes inside the garment and then press it down into your small bowl or sink. Then put more ice on top of it.
  • Wait for about 30 minutes or more. It is better to make the gum as cool as possible.
  • Ice will start melting frequently so keep on adding ice.

2.) Scrape the Area to Remove Gum from Clothes

Steps to Follow:

  • After waiting for half an hour, take the ice cubes off (if there are any) the fabric.
  • Now on a flat surface, take a butter-knife and with its non-serrated edge, gently scrape the frozen gum off.
  • It will come right off in a big chunk. You can try scraping off the small bits as well. But make sure that there are none left on your garment.

3.) Washing to Get Gum from Clothes

  • To get the best results, you will need to pre-treat the area using an enzyme detergent or you can just go for a regular clothe soap.
  • Treat the area for as long as you feel, and then wash the area as per garment instructions.
  • You will notice that the garment is free from gum and you can wear it again.

  • Be careful if you use any other substance to remove gums as such substances can possibly ruin your garment.
  • In case this method doesn’t give you desired result or if you don’t want to risk your delicate or expensive clothing, you can simply give it to a reputable cleaner as they will be the only one who can resolve your issue safely and effectively.
